Untitled (The Room That Doesn't Explain Itself)

A surreal, symbolic figurative print made during a depression and left deliberately unexplained: a room of ordinary objects — a rope, a waiting dress, a leaning bicycle, a single glass — that suddenly feel unbearable. Muted sepia and faded green, quietly unsettling. A dark-academia piece for a study or bedroom. Archival giclée canvas print, 32×24 in.

The story behind the piece

I made this during a depression years ago, and I'll be honest with you in a way I'm usually not: I don't know what it means. There is no key. I couldn't tell you why the bicycle leans where it leans, why the dress hangs waiting, why the rope is in the air and the glass is on the table.

That isn't a flaw in the piece. That's the piece. Depression doesn't arrange itself into symbols you can decode over coffee. It hands you a room full of ordinary objects that suddenly feel unbearable, and it offers no explanation. I left it untitled because naming it would be a lie. Some things you don't survive by understanding. You survive them by getting up the next morning anyway.
